In a recent announcement, the program that started in 2008, will allow certain taxpayers who have been unemployed for 30 day or longer to avoid failure-to-pay penalties. The agency will grant a six-month grace period that will prevent the taxpayer from incurring late fees of 0.5% of their total tax bill per month.

Under this new relief program, eligible taxpayers can avoid the failure-to-pay penalty until October 15 2012, which is six months beyond the filing deadline.
