Termination Checklist: Let Go of Employees Properly

Whenever employees are leaving an organization, procedure to facilitate their move from the company is laid out through a termination checklist to ensure that they leave in an organized way. Different organizations, departments and positions require different termination checklists. High positions would have a lot of things to clear while lesser positions would have shorter lists. The number of years an individual has served also has more detailed checklist to clear. All these situations can be summed up under a simple management procedure called termination checklist.

Termination of employment could be at the end of a contract or due to other reasons. The employee and the organization have to work out best procedure for the termination process through mutual agreement for mutual benefits. This could be as a result of retirement, voluntary resignation, involuntary termination or lay off and others. This will affect the status quo of the employee as regards their position in the company and their privileges.  As a result, they would have to return employee property as well as get paid for what is due to them.   • Equipment and ID cards return
  • Stop Company email
  • Company property hand over( cars, documents, computers etc)
  • Stopped Access to company data network system
  • Office and desk or cabinet Keys handover
  • Finance clearance ( includes petty cash advances paid, company loans etc)
  • Security clearance
  • Library Clearance

Also inclusive in the termination checklist is clearance on all company benefits like insurance covers, benefits reviews, expense reports, exit interview, filling in the termination form and other details that a company could have like disciplinary action.
