What is the best advice that someone living in Milton Keynes who wants to enter into the legal profession as a solicitor?

Most Solicitors have to start their careers by taking a law degree at University and then obtaining a place as a trainee solicitor with a local practice. Afterwards you will need to attend law school and need to take the Legal Practice Course, LPC qualification, followed by a two year training contract with a local legal firm.

You can also enter into the legal profession if you are a non-graduate and have time served experience within a legal firm or have a non-legal degree. You will need to take a law conversion course or a Common Professional Examination CPE or train as a Solicitor through the Institute of Legal Executives, ILEX program.

After successfully completing the entry examinations you will again need to complete the Legal Practice Course, LPC.

Most legal practitioners need to have a good legal knowledge within their chosen field and also a nature disposed to dealing with people’s problems, frustrations and worries. The majority of legal work either involves the resolution of disputes or the interpretation of legal statutes.

Typically salaries in legal work can be well paid, trainee solicitors start from around £15,000 to £17,000 per annum. Once you become a fully qualified solicitor you can command salaries from £25,000 to £50,000 per annum, while partners within even relatively small practices can earn between £40,000 and £80,000. Partners working for large legal companies or as part of the legal department of a big company can receive recompense in excess of £100,000.

There are a number of related fields that by starting off entering into the solicitors sector you could also qualify for working in. Barristers, court clerk, legal executive all have similar beginnings, and work within the probation service or as a welfare rights officer operate within a similar environment.
